The Littlest Hero

Daily Life, General, Poultry | April 30, 2018

Remember little Hazel?

baby chick in sweater

Her mother hatched her little ones just as the nights were getting cold. Shortly after she started molting (losing her feathers). This resulted in two babies dying overnight so I brought Hazel inside to live with me for the winter.

In order to keep Hazel from getting lonely and allow her to hang with Kahuna and me during the day I made a sweater diaper out of an old sock. This let her freely roam the house and not mess up my white floor. She now has her own little flock and roams the property like a big girl.

Last week I was enjoying a bit of porch time during a particularly warm morning.  A bug kept flying around my face. I swatted at it repeatedly trying to keep it out of my cup of tea. Hazel was sitting at my feet observing my spastic behavior and irritating visitor.

I was just about to go back in the house when the flying pest decided to change up it’s flight pattern and visit Hazel’s face. It made it’s first fly by and got her attention. As it circled back to buzz Hazel again she unceremoniously ate it out of the air.

Hazel is my hero. The end.
