One 14 hour UHaul ride with no cruise control later and it’s official, I’m in Mississippi and don’t have a clue what I’m doing but bring on the fabulous farm life!
It’s day two and I’m already in love with this property. I wondered if anyone would notice a newbie in the neighborhood, and if so, would they bother to come by or would it be like Tampa where people couldn’t care less about knowing neighbors…with the exception of Hyde Park – loved my neighbors there.
I didn’t have to wait long for my answer. The first neighbor stopped by on day 1 and chatted for awhile then informed me it wouldn’t be “neighborly” if he didn’t take me to dinner. So we went to Cracker Barrel…at 5 pm. J
The next afternoon I looked out my kitchen window to see a four wheeler with a woman holding a pie and a big dog making their way up my driveway. The dog headed straight for my pond for a swim. The young woman carrying a pie walked up and rang my doorbell. I adored her instantly, her warm welcome and hug accompanied by the egg custard pie was more than I have ever gotten as a new resident, anywhere. So far, country living – all two days of it was already making me feel at settled and happy. Maybe I didn’t make a mistake after all.
About two hours later I was washing my car when I heard a loud engine and saw a large tractor pulling up my driveway. Yes, I said a tractor. It was a kind older cotton & beef farmer, farmer Steve. He wanted to introduce himself and let me know he owns all the property surrounding mine. Having someone pull up my driveway on a tractor to chat is surreal for a city girl. I can already tell this is going to be an adventure.
I’m Jake Keiser – seeking self-reliance and a fabulous farm life.
