I haven’t posted since August so I thought I should check in. The kudzu and grape vines, as well as some of the trees are starting to get that dusty, peppered look as they prepare to lose their leaves again. My biggest pecan tree is heavy with nuts so I’m hoping for a good harvest this year. The last two years were terrible harvests, especially when I have to fight the squirrels for the few quality nuts. On the bright side, the cotton is high and it’s a lovely sight to see all the “southern snow” along the country roads:
Maybelle has almost completely recovered from the dog attack. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see her heal. She’s my lone goat now and I thought she would be lonely but with Luca and the other animals she seems in great spirits. So much so that her personality has changed from being an alpha bitch to acting like a kid again. She runs and bucks and plays with Luca and even wags her tail like a dog when she sees me coming. The vet said she’s a miracle and it’s not uncommon for animals to change their personalities after near death experiences.
I’ve been taking so many pictures of her she finally got tired of my crap, but here she is – with her new collar:
My summer garden was yet again a horrific failure but I’m happy to report that last year’s pumpkin smashing event I hosted somehow produced volunteers that my animals have yet to discover:
The other day I was looking out my window, admiring my newly potted plants – out of reach of Maybelle – and saw my turkey hen, Marsha, fly onto the picnic table to check out my new flowers. I watched as she proceeded to Edward Scissorhands my flowers in short order. When I went out to ask her what she thought she was doing she gestured to the sky as if some mythical beast flew down and had its way with my flowers. She thinks I’m dumb. Sigh.
Finally, I’m stoked that I’m almost finished with the first draft of my memoir for Random House. I can’t tell you how good it feels to get everything out of my head and onto paper. Oh, and for those who know or follow me – the weather allowed me to have two fires to far. Yay fireplace/gumbo/pecan season is upon us!
