With so many people looking to save money, cultivate their own foods as well as teach their children, I thought I’d do a quick post about regrowing kitchen scraps. Did you know some scraps can be regrown? Things like green onions, beets, carrots, celery, many leafy greens, turnips – even pineapple, can be regrown. Keeping in mind pineapple takes a couple years to reproduce itself but others are much quicker to regenerate so your kiddos won’t get bored watching their little kitchen miracle.
All of the below kitchen scraps were simply placed in a container with water in a morning sun windowsill.
Green Onions are the fastest regrow/reuse scrap. It only takes a little over a week to get more usable green onion:

Celery is another satisfying scrap to regrow. It’s not as fast as green onions but it’s fun to watch grow.
Unfortunately I didn’t get a before photo, but this is a few days growth:
This is over a week later:
Eventually the outer ribs of the original scrap will start to rot and fall away. This is normal. Just keep the water fresh as it clouds.
I like to make fresh juice with organic carrots. This time I decided to regrow. This is day one:
Three days later, you can already see a green sprout!
Beets are another root I like to juice with. Here’s day one, pay close attention to the top part of the upper left beet top:
Three days later – check out the growth on the upper left cluster!
Presuming you have a little windowsill space, regrowing the vegetables you use often can be fun and rewarding for you and your family.
