I love having a backyard bounty. I have five pecan trees, three of which are producing and showing signs of getting ready to drop their nuts.
My fruit and nut trees have had a hard time between pests and the drought. Last year the yield was small so hopefully this year will be better.
Hunting for pecans is a lot like an adult Easter egg hunt. Several times a day I try to beat the squirrels to the freshly fallen nuts. Sometimes on windy days I can fill my pockets many times over with pecans.
Over the years the animals have watched me pecan hunting and now Luca also tries to eat them. I don’t know how he can stand the tannins in the shells but somehow he does.
This week the weather is finally expected to be a bit more fall-like. Cooler weather makes for better foraging simply due to getting easily overheated from the exercise. And other than the leaves changing colors the pecans falling really help usher in the spirit of the holiday season.
While most people look forward to pecan pies and cookies, and I do too, I’m more excited about having pecan milk. I replaced almonds and almond milk with pecans once I moved here. Most almonds in the US are now pasteurized and expensive so I prefer to use pecans as a substitute.
If you’d like to see a quick video for making nut milk you can visit my video page or if you’d like the extended directions for making it I have a post here.
Happy fall, y’all!
