Last week I was away from the farm for a few days. Every time I’m away the chickens take full advantage of their farm sitters by hiding their eggs all over the place. Sometimes they get surprisingly creative.
The first morning after my return I was busy making breakfast when I was startled by a very close, very loud egg song right behind me. BOK BOK BAGAWK! Most of my girls sing the “egg song” after they lay. Some songs are quiet and sweet sounding, others are obnoxious to the point of bragging.
I quickly turned towards the window and saw tiny Penelope (a mini chicken) staring at me through the window….six feet off the ground. As she continued belting out her egg song I walked over, lifted the window and looked down into the flower box she was sitting in. There was one of her tiny, ivory eggs. I plucked the warm egg from her makeshift nest, grabbed a basket and went on my own personal Easter Egg hunt. There’s no telling how many are still out there but I think my hunt was a success:
