Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know – buying firewood for newbies

General | July 24, 2016

I’ve learned a lot since moving to the country.  I often realize there’s still a lot I don’t know. If you’ve followed me for long you know how much I love having a fireplace. I can burn through a cord of wood quickly. I’ve had people tell me repeatedly to make sure I buy seasoned wood. I’ve always thought: Duh, who would buy anything else to use right away? Apparently, me.

The first two years I just presumed the wood I was buying was seasoned – turns out, it wasn’t…. This year, a friend told me about another source for wood that was less expensive than what I had been buying. He said they only had 2 cords of seasoned wood left. So I bought some.

When they delivered it I realized how lightweight the wood was and commented on it – they gave me a weird look. Evidently, the wood I bought my first two years was green, fresh from the forest. It was very difficult to light, popped and produced a lot of steam and had to be tended constantly. I just figured that’s the way it was. :-/

The seasoned wood lights quickly and stays lit. Pretty awesome stuff. Yes, I know, this is something I should have known but sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.
This certainly isn’t the hardest lesson I’ve learned here but it’s definitely an important one.

At least now I can keep this little guy warm easier:
