Catch Me If You Can

Daily Life, General | April 27, 2017

Every day I’m careful not to let Luca into the chicken coop. He isn’t allowed in the coop because he disturbs the hens and steals eggs.  I can’t blame him for wanting farm fresh eggs but he gets plenty that are laid in random places around the farm.

It’s not fair to the hens who just want a little peace and quiet to have to worry about a big dog disturbing them. Most of them know Luca won’t hurt them but I imagine it’s quite unsettling to have a large entity hover over you while you are doing your business. Luca will literally stuff his nose under a surprised hen and take her freshly laid egg. If there isn’t an egg yet he’ll move on to the next nest with a hen. He’s no dummy.

This morning I wasn’t paying attention so he lumbered into the coop behind my back. By the time I heard the commotion of surprised and pissed off hens Luca was trotting out with his prize.

I tried to chase him but he knows I can’t catch him so it turns into a game of catch-me-if-you-can, and Keep Away. I hate those games.

This was his challenging me, egg in his mouth…just out of my reach:

Despite knowing I’m not going to win this game, I’m stubborn so I pursue anyway. This activity is one of the many reasons I no longer need a gym membership.

So…Luca had a farm fresh egg for breakfast.
